Planning an Intimate Wedding in Northern California

Couples, Wedding

There’s something that is quietly luxurious about an intimate wedding in Northern California. The day becomes slower and more intentional when the guest list is short. You notice things you might not have otherwise: the way the light moves through the trees, the faces of people you love, the small moments that so easily get lost in bigger celebrations.

As a Bay Area wedding photographer and videographer, I’ve photographed weddings and elopements throughout Northern California, and I love working with couples who keep things purposefully small. A smaller guest list definitely does not mean a smaller experience. In my experience, it’s more personal, allows you to feel more present, and offers an all-around more authentic day.

I think that one of the benefits of planning a small wedding here is how much is within reach. You have the option to say your vows at Golden Gate Park, under the redwoods, or even on a cliff above the Pacific, all within a few hours from San Francisco. Here are just some of my favorite intimate wedding venues in Northern California, plus what to know as you plan your special day.

Why Choose an Intimate Wedding in San Francisco

A smaller guest list changes more than just the room size. It also changes the pace of the entire day. There’s more time to actually be present with your people, rather than wasting time moving through a buffet line or splitting your attention across a hundred conversations, never really taking it all in.

The landscape around San Francisco carries a lot of the emotional and visual work on its own. Redwood groves, foggy beaches, and wide open ridgelines don’t need an elaborate setup to feel amazing. They already allow for their own sense of occasion.

A big part of what draws me to this kind of photography is how I’d rather document a quiet, authentic moment between a loving couple than stage something that looks good but doesn’t feel true to you.

You Can Get Married Almost Anywhere in Northern California

Here’s something a lot of couples don’t realize: you aren’t limited to just the traditional wedding venues. Once you acquire a California marriage license, you can hold your ceremony almost anywhere in the state, from a city park to a beach to a mountaintop.

However, the catch is that many public places require a permit, even for small ceremonies. National park land around the Bay Area requires a permit for ceremonies of any size, city parks have their own reservation process, and state parks handle permits through their local district offices. Rules, fees, and time restrictions do change, so always confirm the current requirements directly with the agency that manages your preferred location. Popular locations can book up to a year out, so the earlier you start, the better.

My Favorite Intimate Wedding Locations in Northern California

These are the venues and locations I love to recommend to couples, starting right in the city and working outward.

Golden Gate Park

Fun fact: you don’t have to leave the city for a ceremony surrounded by green. Golden Gate Park has several reservable outdoor wedding sites through San Francisco Recreation and Parks, including the Rose Garden, Shakespeare Garden, and the Portals of the Past at Lloyd Lake. I’ve photographed an intimate ceremony in Golden Gate Park  as well as another Golden Gate Park wedding, and this spot always gives me a mix of soft light and quiet corners that feel so far away from the city around it.

Muir Woods

Just across the Golden Gate Bridge, Muir Woods feels like stepping into another world. Towering redwoods create a cathedral-like setting that’s perfect for a small group celebrating a holy moment. Ceremony sites and guest counts are limited, but this is exactly what makes it feel so intimate. You can see a Muir Woods wedding I photographed to get a feel for the light under the canopy.

Marin Headlands and Rodeo Beach

The Marin Headlands offer some of the most dramatic coastal views close to San Francisco, and Rodeo Beach is one of my favorite intimate wedding locations in Northern California. Rolling hills meet a rugged beach, and on clear evenings, the light over the water is unforgettable. Take a look at a Rodeo Beach wedding I photographed in the Marin Headlands.

Mt. Tamalpais

About half an hour from the city, Mt. Tam gives you sweeping views over the Bay, the Pacific, and on clear days, all the way back to San Francisco. The historic Mountain Theater, a stone amphitheater built into the hillside, is one option, but the mountain’s ridgelines and overlooks work beautifully for couples who want something open and expansive.

Marin Civic Center

For couples who love architecture, the Marin County Civic Center in San Rafael is a hidden gem. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, it’s full of sweeping arches, bold color, and mid-century lines you won’t find anywhere else in the Bay Area. The Marin County Clerk’s Office performs civil ceremonies here by appointment, which makes it a simple, meaningful option for a very intimate and small wedding.

Sea Ranch

About two hours north of San Francisco, Sea Ranch is one of the most peaceful and quiet intimate wedding venues in Northern California. Weathered wood architecture, open meadows, and bluffs above the ocean make it feel like a private escape for you and your closest people. See Arianna and John’s Sea Ranch wedding for a look at this stretch of coast.

Big Sur and Garrapata State Park

If you’re willing to travel a little farther south of the city, Big Sur is a hard intimate wedding location to beat. Garrapata State Park combines rocky shoreline, coastal bluffs, and redwood canyons, and it’s managed by California State Parks, so you’ll want to check permit requirements early. I’ve photographed post-wedding portraits at Garrapata State Park, and it’s one of the most breathtaking backdrops on the California coast, in my professional opinion.

A Note on San Francisco City Hall

If you’re picturing something even smaller, San Francisco City Hall deserves its own mention. I’ve photographed both a simple civil ceremony there and a private celebration on the Mayor’s Balcony, and each offers a different kind of intimate experience. Choosing the Right Location for Your Northern California Intimate Wedding

Start with your guest list. Some spots, like Muir Woods or the Civic Center wedding room, only work for a handful of people, while others can handle a few dozen guests.

From there, think about the travel. A Golden Gate Park ceremony keeps everyone in the city, while Sea Ranch or Big Sur turns your wedding into a small getaway. It’s also important to consider the weather. Coastal spots can be foggy or windy, especially in summertime, so having a layer and a flexible timeline goes a long way.

And don’t forget the permit. Build it into your planning schedule early, so paperwork never becomes a last-minute stressor.

Planning an Intimate Wedding in Northern California?

Whether you’re exchanging vows under the redwoods, on a windswept beach, or in the middle of Golden Gate Park, an intimate wedding gives you something a larger celebration rarely can: the chance to be fully present with the people who matter most to you.

I would love to help document your small wedding in Northern California. And if you’re still deciding on a location, I’m always happy to share what I’ve learned photographing weddings throughout the Bay Area. Reach out anytime.

Frequently Asked Questions

What counts as an intimate wedding in Northern California?

Most couples I work with consider anywhere from two to about fifty guests an intimate wedding. The exact number matters less than the feeling: a celebration where you can actually spend time with everyone there.

Can I get married anywhere in Northern California?

With a California marriage license, you can hold your ceremony almost anywhere, including parks, beaches, and even private homes. Many public places require a permit, though, so check with the city, state, or national park that manages your location before you lock in a date.

Do I need a permit for a small wedding at Muir Woods or the Marin Headlands?

Yes. Both are managed by the National Park Service as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, which requires a permit for weddings of any size. Apply as early as you can, since popular dates book up.

How far in advance should I plan an intimate wedding in the Bay Area?

For popular outdoor spots, six months to a year is ideal, especially for weekend dates. Smaller civil ceremonies can often come together faster.

Do you photograph elopements and City Hall weddings in San Francisco?

I do, and I love them. If that feels more like your speed, you can read more about my City Hall elopements here.
